How does MEG-3® compare to flax?
Omega-3 found in plants (such as flax) is ALA, while fish oil contains Omega-3 EPA and DHA. Omega-3 EPA/DHA found in fish oil is the body's best, most balanced and readily absorbed Omega-3 EPA/DHA source, whereas the body can convert ALA into EPA/DHA, but does so inefficiently and the conversion rate can be as low as 1%.
How much MEG-3® do I need per day?
In general, 500 mg of Omega-3 EPA/DHA per day is recommended (ISSFAL) for the maintenance of cardiovascular health. Also check out the recommended daily intake as suggested by worldwide health organizations.
Can I take MEG-3® supplements if I am allergic to fish or other things?
Allergies to fish are usually associated with certain proteins found in the edible muscle or flesh portion of fish. Refined fish oil usually has a very low protein content due to the processing and purification steps required to extract and refine the pure oil.
In the US, the Food, Drug & Cosmetic Act requires the labeling of recognized food allergens (including fish) on food packaging. Refined fish oils are exempt from this US requirement, due to the very low protein content. Outside the US, all other markets still require the declaration of fish oil as a potential food allergen.
A small number of ONC microencapsulated fish oil products (including all Kosher and Halal microencapsulated products) are made with fish gelatin. Fish gelatin primarily contains fish collagen derived from fish skins (not muscle/flesh). Available published data and anecdotal experience suggest that the allergenic potential of fish gelatin is low. However, in all markets, the fish gelatin in our microencapsulated fish oil products is required to be declared as a potential food allergen.

Is MEG-3® FDA-approved?
In the US, dietary supplements (including those containing MEG-3® oils) do not require approval from the FDA. Under the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994 (DSHEA), companies manufacturing and/or distributing dietary supplements are responsible for determining that they are safe and confirming that any claims about them are adequately substantiated. In consequence, dietary supplements do not need prior approval from FDA before they are marketed, with the exception of new dietary ingredients which have not been previously marketed.
